On foot, by bike or by canoe, the Great Zêzere Route, which runs along the entire flow of the river from its source near Manteigas to its mouth at Constância, involves 14 municipalities: Figueiró dos Vinhos, Abrantes, Constância, Ferreira do Zêzere, Oleiros, Pampilhosa da Serra, Pedrógão Grande, Sertã, Vila de Rei and Guarda. They would then be joined by Covilhã, Fundão, Castanheira de Pêra and Manteigas.
The aim is for each person to choose the way they want to travel along the 358.5 km route, with the highest point at 1454 meters (Serra da Lousã) and the lowest point at 21 meters, and they can even use intermodal stations to change the way they travel. This way you can canoe down the river and, at each reservoir or dam, you can walk or cycle along the trails.
Vila de Rei was one of the municipalities that started this project, and the Grande Rota do Zêzere will run for 46 km through the municipality, covering almost the entire bank of the dam as well as the nearest towns (Vilar do Ruivo, Fernandaires, Alcamim, Zaboeira and Cabecinha), ending at the River Beach of Penedo Furado.
